I'm a third year medical student. I post things to do with medicine. See all Medical Mnemonics here

Questions asked

Hi there, just wanted say I love your site (I’m a last year med student) and especially the mnemonics. You’ve got quite the collection! Maybe I can add another one: Otis Campbell. I’m sure you can find out what it stands for and what it’s a mnemonic for. Please keep this site going, I love it!

T -2. Tricyclic Antidepressants
I - 3. Isoniazid or Insulin
S - 4. Sympathomimetics

Anonymous asked: Are you now or were you ever curious about myoclonic jerks? That “spasm” that happens right before people fall asleep?

Myoclonic jerks basically refer to sudden muscle contractions and relaxations. It’s perfectly normal of it occurs occasionally, (if not in a pattern/sequence). Hiccups can also be referred to as myoclonic jerks. They can occasionally be due to neurological disorders though (the jerky movements in Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy are also called myoclonic jerks). If you want more info you can read this or this.

Anonymous asked: I ended up with a subungual hematoma a fweek-ish ago (long story) and I inadvertently ended up draining it today. What drained was brown and smelled like poo. literally. poo. Should I be horrifically concerned?

I would recommend you seeing your doctor asap. If it’s smelling it might be infected. Especially if you’ve drained it yourself.

Hello! I’m just wondering how you’re finding medical school, and how much “homework” do you get on an average night?

Hi!

I like how medical school is going so far, it’s extremely tough obviously,it gets very stressful, but if you’ve got the interest and are consistent with your work then you will enjoy it! I have to admit it is a lot different than what I thought it would be like when I was in high school, I knew I was in for a tough couple of years, but you don’t actually know how it is for you until you get there. We don’t actually get homework, not at my university anyway. Most of the studying you do is pretty much upto you. You are generally expected to review the day’s work at home, in addition to the next day’s work, and read for any upcoming exams/tests (they motivate me to study). So I basically try put in about 4-6 hours of extra study a day (after 8 to 5 classes).

Anonymous asked: is this true “http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110603/us_yblog_thelookout/first-man-functionally-cured-of-hiv”?

It is a possibility. They say that a small amount of people are actually immune to the disease, this I know for a fact is true. Research (by the HIV research here in Kenya) has shown that a certain number of people even after being exposed to the virus regularly did not get affected. This was shown especially in prostitutes who are exposed to the virus regularly. They actually did develop some sort of resistance. More work is currently being done on this. The procedure they used (stem cell transplant) has been used once before to eliminate the virus. You can read more about it here.

Anonymous asked: Aah wow, I see you are a Medical Student.
Assuming that you’re from the UK; may I enquire as to where you study Medicine?
Thanks :)

Hi,

I actually don’t study in the UK. I study in Kenya (different, I know), but we do follow the British system here.

cjos219 asked: Also, I love your blog!

thank you :)

cjos219 asked: In response to the EMT question:
EMT classes can take anywhere from 1-4 months depending on how often they meet. I’m from the northeast and most states require 120-150 hours of class to be able to take the EMT licensing exam. Also you need to get CPR for the Healthcare Provider in order to take an EMT class. This is an 8 hour class and is usually done in 1 day, sometimes 2. Most EMT classes will offer a CPR class immediately prior to the class for people who need this certification, it does usually cost extra though. You can also take the CPR class on your own by looking up when your local Red Cross or American Heart Association will be holding a class.

Feel free to message me with any additional questions. I have been an EMT for about 4 years and would be happy to answer any questions.

Here’s your answer lifeinsideamusicboxx . Thank you so much for answering the question!

kfalcor asked: CPR is an 8 hour course given by the AHA

thank you for your input!

lifeinsideamusicboxx asked: For EMT certification, does one need to get CPR certification first, or…? How long do those courses take (for CPR)? I’m trying to get this done over the summer before school starts up in the fall again. Thank you!

From what I know, EMT training usually takes about 2-6 months, it varies in different countries, this site says that CPR training is about 100 hours which are required to get the EMT certification! If anyone has any input please leave a message!

white-coat-deactivated20111012- asked: i think the gif you reblogged from thepointlessawesome is a PET scan, not an MRI (not trying to be a troll, just wondering if it was mislabeled).

I think you’re right, It is a PET scan. Thanks for the correction. I’ll fix it right away!

Anonymous asked: what do you think about gender selection using ART(ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY)?
the bioethics may be face?

Personally, I think its a great advancement when it comes to genetic engineering, there could be advantages especially when it comes to controlling passage of some genetic diseases etc. But then again, it would be unethical. Think about the long term effects. male:female ratio would completely change, not that its a bad thing, but I believe in the matter of chance. I feel it could be taking things a little too far choosing the sex of your child. How about being happy and satisfied with how things go, and leaving things to science and nature. There’s always pros and cons.

Feel free to leave your opinions and comments.

eloso asked: That ‘Dying under an MRI’ thing? Yeah, thats from the AMC series The Walking Dead, in which… well, i guess someone is dying under MRI, but then they want to get up and eat some brains. So, i wouldnt take it as a particularly factual presentation.

thanks for the info, I actually had no idea- wasn’t even sure if it was really true! I’ll be sure to make note of it!
